Match Report for 1st XV 18/10/2014 versus Old Yardleians Lost 10-24

Old Coventrians were away to Old Yardleians and the conditions at Tilehouse Lane were ideal for a good flowing game of rugby.  We unfortunately didn't get that and again the efforts of the back row and some last ditch tackles prevented any scoring from either sets of threequarters.
The author of this report saw the referee award 27 points to OY's and 10 points to OC's.  This was the view of many but for whatever reason the match card recorded a 24-10 victory to OY's.
This was deserved because OY's were outstanding in the rolling mauls and dominated the set piece scrums for most of the game.  OC's were unable to secure their own lineout ball so the opportunities for an open game were limited.
It would be easy to criticise OC's for an abject performance but this was not the case.  Yes there were mistakes made, dropped passes and dropped catches but the tenacity of some of the boys both in the tackle and carrying the ball was great to watch.  Dan Gover and Alex Woolfenden were excellent carrying the ball and Adam Barnett and Mike Morris tackled everything.  Sam Farrington and Paul Wilkes gave their all.  OY's three tries came from rolling mauls which the lighter, less experienced OC's pack were unable to stem.  OC's try came from No8 Dan Gover.
In the five league games so far this season the coaching staff have used close to forty players in the first team.  This is a staggering statistic to the long term supporters of this club and is difficult to understand.  We acknowledge the high proportion of injuries incurred this season and last but the instability of the 1st XV squad needs to improve if we are to pull ourselves up from the bottom of this league.  We have been beaten by fellow strugglers so the rest of the season can only get harder.  The facilities, support  and encouragement for this club comes from a lot of non playing highly committed coaching and management personnel.  It is true I haven't studied the statistics to understand the high turnout of players but I will stick my neck out and appeal to playing membership to examine their individual commitment.  A stable side with first choice players will produce a winning side and individuals will enjoy the rugby that much more.  The pressure doubles on the lads that turn out week after week.  The club exists to provide an environment for young people to enjoy the game, build the spirit of teamwork and playing for each other.  The players need to grasp this with both hands.
Anyway,
The first 15 minutes the play is between the 22 metre lines.  OC's get into OY 22 with a break from Marc  Marren.  Dan Gover and Alex Woolfender are prominent in trying to continue the move but it comes to nothing and OY's are back in OC's territory.  Alex Woolfender and Matty Fielder get us back to OY 22 with some runs  following turnover ball close to OC line.  Dan Gover completes a drive and scores between which Alex Telfer converts.

OC's earn a penalty inside their 22 following an OY driving maul and Alex Telfer puts the ball back to the OY 22 and there is a lineout which OY turnover and they make good ground up the left and have a scrum close in.  They drive but the released pass is dropped.  However OY drive the OC scrum put in and the score comes just right of the posts.  A simple conversion after 31 minutes.

OC's restart but there is an adjudged tip tackle on the OY receiver and OC's get a yellow.  Things are more difficult now in the maul.  OY have a lineout 35 metres out from OC's line and they drive the ensueing maul to the 5 metre line and OC's infringe.  OC's get a penalty at the lineout 5 metres out and clear to 35 metres out. OC's lose ground from this and OY's drive to within 5 metres.  OY elect to scrum after a penalty award 5 metres out .  They drive and appear to touch down but the referee has seen something and gives a penalty try which is simply converted just before the half time whistle.

Again some good progress with runs from Dan G and Alex W  but OC's get pinned in their own 22 following a mistake in retrieving an OY kick ahead.  OY look dangerous with a  scrum on OC 5 metre line but OC's get a freekick which they try to run out but they get penalised 20 metres out, centre field and the penalty kick is simple.

OC's are now in site of the OY 30 metre line and get another penalty after a Dan G run.  Alex Telfer adds the points.
17-10
Kevin Grace retrieves a kick ahead and decides to run.  He is supported by Alex W and Mike Morris Dan G continues the attack and Marc Marren goes for the line only 5 metres out but penalised .
OC's are battling with the scrambled possession and OY have it 30 metres from their own line.  It gets to the right wing who is brought down emphatically with a text book tackle from Dan Gover.  OC's are not lying down and continue the forward runs in the OY half.  The released pass goes awry but OC's are still in the OY half but an OY penalty brings play to 10 metres out from the OC line on the right.  OC's penalised at a subsequent scrum and OY make the kick from in front to make the score 20-10  after over 45 minutes elapsed time of the second half.
20-10
OC's are briefly in OY half but another penalty and the threat is over.  OY have a lineout 5  metre out.  OY win it but accidently offside and it is an OC scrum 5 metres out centre field.  OY drive the set piece over for a score just right of the posts.
27-10 final score  (It will be recorded as a 24-10 defeat as per the match score card)

We host Pinley next week who are newly promoted this season.  They are performing well and have won 3 of their five games this season.  We hope some of our injured players can return and we look forward to more fun next Saturday.
