A break from league fixtures today 22nd January

No league game today.
There will be a few games in our league today where the teams catch up with fixtures which were postponed from a few weeks ago. If you are desperate to watch any of our opponents then Leamington, Pinley and Old Laurentian are playing home fixtures.
However our Colts are at home today in a Cup game and it would be great to give your support to the up and coming talent.
The Archers have an away game against Coventry Welsh.
Kick off's will be 2:15pm
The 1st team host Spartans next week when the league resumes.

A 12-19 reversal to Nuneaton Old Ed's on Saturday Jan 15 but what a performance

The boys surprised a lot of spectators on Saturday but self belief, grit and determination shone through.
19-0 down at the break OC's fought back and won the second half scoring a dozen points without reply for a final result of 12-19 and a deserved bonus point against a side who now top the league.
How fortunate we are as a club in a number of areas.
The flexibility of some of the boys is amazing. Young Josh McMurray is at fly half and centre today. Elliot Sheepy drops in at No8 having spent the previous part of the season at No 10. We had two hookers on the flanks today, Dom Ames and Ed Bryant and they were excellent. Declan Misskimons, a scrum half by trade played at full back and got the man of the match award from coach Al Roberts
We have some great clubmen: veterans (forgive me) Mark Hyslop and Andy Cox were called upon to play today and they were outstanding.
The younger boys Tom Burns and Conor Thripleton took advantage of their opportunities.
The start of the game looked ominous for the home support as Nuneaton crossed on the right within 3 minutes before OC's had got their hands on the ball. It started with an incisive run from the scrum half in the middle and moved at pace to the right wing for a try.
It would be another 30 minutes before Nuneaton again crossed. Most of the play was in the OC's half. When Nuneaton had the ball they ran at us hard and tried to get the ball wide but the defensive tackling was excellent and we forced errors. We had our share of possession and we were effective in retaining it with forward drives. Elliot and Dom Ames were evident here. Dom had extra freedom from the back row for his trademark bulldozing runs. The pack were great, we held our own pretty much in the set piece and we didn't allow Nuneaton to gain significant advantage from their skilful driving mauls. We got a rare opportunity this half as Josh James received a Nuneaton kick ahead well in his own half and went on a run towards the left side. It ended in the Old Ed's 22 but we lost the ball and they were quickly putting us under pressure again. The second try came out of nowhere when a second row started a run from the middle; he wasn't brought down early enough and the ball was moved right for the try. We were fighting hard to keep our visitors out and we managed to clear a few times with some good kicks from Mark Hyslop. We were unable to push them out far enough and a third try came on 36 minutes when fast hands put the right wing clear and he was able to touch down between the uprights for a half time score of 19-0
OC's are straight onto the attack in the second period and we pepper the OE try line on the left with forward drives. We get a penalty 5 metres out and Dom Ames takes a tap and drives himself to the line. Elliot converts and we are 7-19 down with 4 minutes of the half played. We are spending more time in the OE half, Josh McMurray gets an opportunity for an elusive run. OE however get very close with some big forward runs but the defense is up to everything thrown at us.
OC's second try comes from some pressure on the right. We have a scrum about 20 metres out and Elliot picks up at the back and offloads to scrum half Jordan Kelly who makes good ground. Jordan has created the space to put Josh James in for a try on the right wing with 32 minutes of the half played. Old Ed's are looking for more, They want to prove their league position but the tackling is superb. I remember some terrific hits from Conor Thrippleton and Andy Cox saving potential scores.
So we are 12-19 down but still have five minutes to play and we are on the OE 22 with our lineout but it gets spoiled and our opportunity is lost.
I can't praise every one of the boys enough for this performance. Proud to be an Old Coventrian today.

DISCIPLINARY

Please read and note the latest letter from Warwickshire RFU Disciplinary Committee which sets out increased sanctions. Everyone should read this - not just PLAYERS but SPECTATORS and COACHES as well. PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT: SPECTATORS (you know who you are) BARRACKING FROM THE TOUCHLINE CAN INCITE THE PLAYERS. The officials do a difficult job and without them we would not be playing rugby - remember regardless of what you think they are always right - just accept it and quietly walk away. If you get carded you are letting down your team, even more so if you pick up a ban which is now likely to be extremely lengthy so READ about it HERE TAKE IT IN in and REMEMBER IT DURING THE GAME - do not let down your team and club.

We now have a set of pop-up banners for our mini age groups (under 7s to under 12s) for use during home and away matches and for training. Sylvia would like to thank everyone who donated rugby kit for us to re-sell. We raised £570 which helped to contribute towards them. The aim for the 2019 / 2020 season is to buy a bike rack.
