OC's out of the Warwickshire Shield with a home loss to Barkers 26-8

OC's go down 26-8 to Barkers but territory wise the OC lads had much of this game. A number of youngsters had been given their IstXV opportunity and they didn't disappoint. They put the Barkers defence under pressure for long periods of this match. However with ball in hand the Barkers boys attacked with pace and frequently turned desperate defence into attacking opportunities with the speed of the three quarter line, a determination to keep the ball alive with good offloads and inside passes which exposed the gaps and produced four tries.
For the first 30 minutes OC's did most of the pressing but it was Barkers who got on the score sheet first with a breakaway from deep in their own half which produced an unconverted try within the first ten minutes. Elliot Sheepy playing at No10 replied for OC's with a try on the left following a good carry from centre Ollie Clark.
It would be 30 minutes before Barkers got to our half and they made it pay with good hands and varied lines of running to produce a second try. No further scores in the first half and the Barkers lads defence kept the OC surges at bay. 5 -12 at the interval.
Barkers have the ball on their own 22 and a missed tackle allows a break which nearly produces a try for them on the right but OC's are back in numbers. OC's are back on the Barkers 5 metre line on the right and Josh Kent takes good ball but the attack breaks down with a knock on. Play is end to end for a few minutes but Barkers infringe about 30 metres from their own line and Alex Telfer slots the penalty for a scoreline of 8-12 twenty minutes into the second period..
OC's see a yellow card and it's not easy playing a man down and Barkers will take advantage and score two further tries, again by keeping the ball alive, changing the direction of play and finally exposing the gaps.
So, a final scoreline of 26-8 but a great effort. OC's can take a real positive from this match with the performances of the younger lads some of whom stepped up to the 1st team for the first time. 17 year old Ryan Revelins was excellent starting at No9. Ryan Evans, James Ashley, Dan Tolley and Broady O'Grady and especially Derek Richard with some tremendous tackles, who all stepped up to the mark and did the club proud.
I can't leave out the performances of Ed Bryant and Lloyd Bates who are generally more accustomed to the role of finishers, however they both started today and were brilliant. Well done lads. There are some great photos of the game if you click on the "OC's on facebook" tab on this page.

ABUSE OF MATCH OFFICIALS-SANCTIONS 2018: ALL PLEASE NOTE

Please read and note the latest letter from Warwickshire RFU Disciplinary Committee which sets out increased sanctions. Everyone should read this - not just PLAYERS but SPECTATORS and COACHES as well. PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT: SPECTATORS (you know who you are) BARRACKING FROM THE TOUCHLINE CAN INCITE THE PLAYERS. The officials do a difficult job and without them we would not be playing rugby - remember regardless of what you think they are always right - just accept it and quietly walk away. If you get carded you are letting down your team, even more so if you pick up a ban which is now likely to be extremely lengthy so READ about it HERE TAKE IT IN in and REMEMBER IT DURING THE GAME - do not let down your team and club.

We now have a set of pop-up banners for our mini age groups (under 7s to under 12s) for use during home and away matches and for training. Sylvia would like to thank everyone who donated rugby kit for us to re-sell. We raised £570 which helped to contribute towards them. The aim for the 2019 / 2020 season is to buy a bike rack.
