Missed opportunities and errors deny OC's a victory at Spartans. [18-11]

There will be disbelief and disappointment amongst the boys as they came away with just a losing bonus point and a scoreline of 18-11.
This game was for the taking but some errors and wrong choices made life difficult.
There was a lot of ability and confidence in the team today. Some overconfidence at times resulted in a number of errors in attack. We probably tried to run the ball from attack too often. There were far to many speculative offloads which went astray where a set up and recycle would have been the safer option. When we did kick to clear we gifted the ball to the Spartans left wing who ran in their first of two tries.
We created Spartans opportunities for them. They created few movements for themselves because our defence was stoic. We struggled again at the set scrum. We won most of our own ball but it was scrappy and we were inching backwards. Spartans were stronger in this phase and they drove a couple of their scrums and things looked dangerous on a couple of occassions.
So, there were some good performances out there but spates of frequent penalties meant we couldn't capitalise on the opportunities.
Perhaps the two yellows and a red for the Spartans was an indication of the pressure we were putting them under.
The game starts well enough with Jordan Diston and Jack Fennel making runs. However Spartans have the ball now,(playing up the slope) and make it to a lineout on the right. OC's rob it and we clear to half way. A couple of rampaging runs and a couple of quickly taken penalties get us to the line but the ball is lost. Spartans respond and have another lineout on the right. We win it but the clearance kick is poor and the Spartans left wing receiver easily runs the ball in for their try after about 14 minutes.
5-0 @ 14 mins
It's end to end stuff. Cory Joy has followed up his kick ahead and puts pressure on the receiver. We are attacking on the left with John Armour but lose the ball in the tackle and Spartans relieve and mount an attack from a lineout on the right. OC's infringe at the breakdown and Spartans kick a penalty to move further ahead.
8-0 @ 32 mins
OC's respond quickly and we rob the receiver from our own restart which annoys Spartans and Alex Telfer slots the penalty goal. Almost immediately after the restart Aaron Croft gallops a distance down the middle and almost makes it. We are still attacking and from a movement following a lineout on the left Alex Telfer is able to slot his second penalty after Spartans infringe. We have another opportunity before the break and cross the Spartan line but we are adjudged "held up"
8-6 at the break and very much in contention despite having the slope to contend with in the second period.
We had made it into the Spartan 22 following a good Alex Telfer half break but Spartans rob the ensuing scrum and from a lineout 15 metres out on the left Spartans execute a simple drive for a try which was converted to increase the lead to 15-6 after just a few minutes of the half.
This is a blow for the OC's but they respond immediately and from a penalty taken quickly on the right the ball comes swiftly through the hands of Alex Telfer and Josh McMurray and on to Cruise Kelly-Evans on the left wing who mesmerises his opposite number with his footwork and dances over for a try unopposed.
15-11 the score now with 10-15 minutes of play in the period. Spartans have had a couple of yellow cards and now the blind side wing forward gets red after about 20 minutes but we can't take the advantage. In fact Spartans seem to rise to the extra effort required and mount a series of attacks. This pressure gets the reward and they slot a penalty after about 33 minutes to take them 18-11 ahead.
Not a lot of time left now but Cruise Kelly -Evans starts a run on the left and then through the hands of Harry Kennedy to Josh James on the right. The movement ends in a lineout on the right. That would be our last opportunity but Spartans missed with a late penalty attempt and we held on to our losing bonus point.
Bad luck lads. I think there were some lessons learned today. Stay confident. I think next week against Old Laurentian is a real opportunity. Looking forward already.

Please read and note the latest letter from Warwickshire RFU Disciplinary Committee which sets out increased sanctions. Everyone should read this - not just PLAYERS but SPECTATORS and COACHES as well. PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT: SPECTATORS (you know who you are) BARRACKING FROM THE TOUCHLINE CAN INCITE THE PLAYERS. The officials do a difficult job and without them we would not be playing rugby - remember regardless of what you think they are always right - just accept it and quietly walk away. If you get carded you are letting down your team, even more so if you pick up a ban which is now likely to be extremely lengthy so READ about it HERE TAKE IT IN in and REMEMBER IT DURING THE GAME - do not let down your team and club.
